The History of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), often referred to as “tapping,” is a powerful blend of ancient wisdom and modern psychology.
Its evolution from a niche alternative therapy to a respected tool in the world of mental health has been happening for the last 30+ years.
Where It All Began
EFT’s roots trace back to the early 1980s when Dr. Roger Callahan, a psychologist, developed Thought Field Therapy (TFT).
Callahan began studying the principles of ancient Chinese medicine, particularly the concept of energy meridians that flow through the body. He discovered that tapping on specific points of the body’s energy meridians and verbalizing specific issues, could dramatically alleviate emotional distress. One of his first breakthroughs came with a client who had a debilitating fear of water. By guiding her to tap on points under her eye while focusing on the fear, her phobia vanished almost instantly.
Gary Craig, a Stanford-trained engineer and personal development enthusiast, became intrigued by Callahan’s work. Recognizing TFT’s potential but frustrated by its complexity, Craig simplified the method.
He eliminated the need for individualized tapping sequences, creating a single streamlined approach that could be applied universally.
Thus, EFT was born in the mid-1990s—a technique accessible to anyone, regardless of their experience or expertise.
EFT's Rise To Prominence
While EFT initially faced skepticism, its practical results began to turn heads. Over the decades, its ability to provide rapid, lasting relief from emotional challenges earned it a dedicated following.
Some of the milestones in EFT’s journey include:
Integration Into Modern Psychology
What was once considered alternative is now finding its place in mainstream mental health. Its incorporation into the emerging field of energy psychology reflects a broader acceptance of combining somatic and cognitive therapies.
Organizations dedicated to energy psychology have been instrumental in promoting research and training, facilitating EFT's acceptance among mental health professionals. The increasing body of empirical evidence supporting EFT's efficacy has encouraged therapists to adopt it as a complementary tool in clinical settings.
